Edify

EXPLAINER VIDEO

PROJECT BACKGROUND

Edify is an EAB product that collects all the data from a university campus and stores it in one place, with analytics and easy-to-use tools. The Edify team had an explainer video from a few years ago, but since then, how they talk about and market Edify has evolved, so it was a time for a refresh.

DESIGN

My first step was to pick a color palette. EAB’s full palette has a wide range of colors and I often like to limit it so that each video has a distinct look. Since Edify is a tech product, I decided to go with cool blues and teals, plus yellow for a touch of brightness.

We went through a few rounds before getting the storyboard right. I started off with a more minimal, icon-based style, with a foundation line that the illustrations could pop up from underneath. But we eventually decided that the storyboard needed more illustrations and characters, and that removing the line would give everything room to breathe.

ANIMATION

The clients wanted a lot of web and hub-and-spoke imagery. To keep them dynamic but easy, I used expressions (aka JavaScript in After Effects) to connect the lines to the circles and to subtly wiggle those circles. Using code instead of animating manually saved me DAYS of work!

I also did the voiceover and all the music editing.
